Type of vaccine
Description
Some examples
Inactivated vaccines
Contain the killed version of the agent causes the illness
Hepatitis A, Flu, Polio, Rabies
Live attenuated vaccines
Contain a weaker version of the agent that causes the illness
Measles, mumps, chickenpox, smallpox
mRNA vaccines
Contains proteins aiming to trigger an immune response
COVID-19
Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide and conjugate vaccines
Contains only certain pieces of the virus such as proteins, sugars, etc.
Hepatitis B, HPV, whooping cough, pneumococcal disease
Toxoid vaccines
Contains toxins (harmful elements) produced by the agent that causes the illness
Diphtheria, tetanus
Viral vector vaccines
Altered version of a different virus as a messenger to create protection
