Lesson 4 Types of Viral Infections

Types of viral infections:

• Respiratory viral infection:
  • Affects the nose, throat and lungs
  • Examples : seasonal influenza, SARS-COV-2
• Viral skin infection:
  • Creates rash
  • examples: herpes simplex virus-1(HSV-1), Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
• Viral food poisoning:
  • viruses can cause  food poisoning
  • examples: Norovirus, Hepatitis A, Rotavirus
• Viral Infections and STIs:
  • examples: human papillomavirus (HPV), Hepatitis B, Genital Herpes, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Transmission: viruses can be transmitted via air, touch, saliva sexual contact or via vectors such as ticks or mosquitos

IMPORTANT: not all viruses are transmitted in the same way.
